Three days off to play GTA 6, completely legally and paid: In Germany, an educational leave course makes exactly that possible. It runs from November 18 to 20, 2026, coinciding with the release of GTA 6 on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The catch: there are only 60 spots.
What is behind the GTA 6 educational leave?
Educational leave in Germany is a legally regulated, paid release from work for certified further training. The provider Dein Bildungsurlaub has created a state-subsidized course called “Open World Games: Lessons from a Digital World.” The content focuses on storytelling in video games, digital culture, and collaboration.
Participants meet in guided groups and solve in-game tasks. From their observations, they are expected to draw practical lessons on storytelling, motivation, community building, and teamwork. An example from the program: How do Easter Eggs keep players engaged, and what can brands, learning opportunities, or teams adopt from this?
Who can participate and what are the limitations?
- Date: November 18 to 20, 2026, three days
- Spots: only 60 participants
- Requirement: at least 18 years old, a suitable device, and a licensed open-world game
- Format: three days online, plus an additional in-person meeting in Berlin
Founder Carlo Dreschel essentially states that modern learning should meet people where their curiosity already lies. According to the press release, a participant from Berlin hopes the experience will help her in her professional life. Her tongue-in-cheek example: someone who has survived a wild car chase might also be able to handle stressful customers.
Why is this more than a PR stunt?
Of course, the timing is clever. GTA 6 is likely to be the biggest launch of the year, and estimates in the USA suggest around 17 percent more vacation requests on release day. Coming up with a course at such a time certainly grabs attention. Nevertheless, the idea is not far-fetched: open-world games are a rather good textbook for narrative structures, player retention, and community dynamics.
Our assessment: For most of us, it will remain classic vacation planning. Only 60 spots are not enough for an entire player base, and participants actually have to complete tasks instead of freely cruising through the city. Furthermore, the source only mentions a “licensed open-world game,” so it remains unclear whether every group task will necessarily take place in GTA 6. Those seriously interested should inquire directly with the provider and check the regulations in their respective German state.
The launch is also becoming a work topic elsewhere: According to IGN, the Australian labor authority informed employees in advance about their leave rights. Whether it's a vacation day or educational leave: the download should be long finished by launch, more on that in our report on the GTA 6 preload with 212 GB storage requirement. And for those wondering if a permanent connection is needed for gameplay, answers can be found in our article on whether GTA 6 can be played offline.

Would you sign up for three days of GTA 6 as educational leave, or is a normal vacation day enough for the release?
