With just two weeks to go until launch, a crucial question is on many gamers' minds: Will GTA 6 be playable without an internet connection? While Rockstar hasn't made any official statements yet, hints found in digital storefronts offer some strong indications.
Will GTA 6 Be Fully Playable Offline?
The PlayStation Store listing, alongside the 'single-player' tag, also states 'Offline Play Enabled.' This strongly suggests that the campaign should function without a continuous internet connection. Furthermore, as GTA 6 is currently a pure single-player experience, forcing players to be constantly online would make little sense.
The Xbox Store, however, presents a slightly more subdued picture. While it also features a single-player indicator, there's no explicit mention of offline play. Instead, Microsoft warns that certain content or features might require an internet connection and a Rockstar account. Whether this will truly be the case remains to be seen, as Rockstar has yet to comment on any account requirements.
When Will an Internet Connection Still Be Necessary?
An internet connection won't be entirely unavoidable, however. The game isn't coming on disc, meaning the hefty 212 GB will need to be downloaded digitally. As we previously reported, the preload begins on November 10th; you can find more details in our report on the preload and required storage space. Subsequent updates will also only be available online. It's still unclear whether an internet connection will be mandatory for the very first launch of the game.
Our Take: Even GTA 5, despite its online mode, allowed players to start the single-player campaign offline. From our perspective, anything different for GTA 6 would be a surprise. However, only rely on this assumption once Rockstar officially confirms it, and as a precaution, ensure everything is downloaded well in advance of launch.
What Does This Mean for Your Launch Day?
Plan your download well in advance and check your console's available storage space. If you're planning to play on the go or with an unreliable internet connection, you should ideally perform a test run without a network after the preload, as soon as technically feasible. Until then, remember: these store listings are strong indicators, but not an official guarantee from Rockstar.
