The Witcher 4: CD Projekt Red Can't Guarantee PS5 Disc Version, But Promises Collector's Box

For those who absolutely want The Witcher 4 as a classic disc on their shelf, CD Projekt Red currently offers no guarantee. Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski told The Game Business that the studio simply has no influence over whether a physical PS5 version of the game will actually be shipped with a disc.

Why Can't CD Projekt Red Simply Decide This Themselves?

The reason lies with Sony: The manufacturer has announced that it will cease production of physical PlayStation game discs starting in early 2028. The Witcher 4 is currently also targeting a release window in 2028 – placing the game squarely within the timeframe where Sony's disc phase-out could take effect. Whether there will still be a disc version at launch thus depends on Sony's manufacturing capacities and decisions, not on CD Projekt Red itself.

What Will Fans Get Instead if the Disc is Absent?

Despite the uncertainty, Nowakowski clarifies: There will be a physical edition no matter what, with or without a data carrier in the box. CD Projekt Red emphasizes that they are big fans of people having access to tangible, collectible items – therefore, the collector's box will be filled with genuine physical extras (so-called "feelies") that you can unbox and touch, even if it ultimately contains only a download code instead of a disc.

For collectors, this is an understandable compromise, even if a real disc is naturally different from a code in a pretty box.
