Sony's plans to phase out physical disc games for the PS5 by 2028 are reportedly causing dissatisfaction not only among players – but also growing frustration behind the scenes of the industry. According to multiple reports, publishers are increasingly criticizing internally how Sony is communicating on the matter.
What exactly is the gaming industry accusing Sony of?
According to a Destructoid report, citing industry sources, third-party publishers are reportedly growing increasingly annoyed by Sony's reserved and sometimes contradictory communication surrounding the end of physical discs. Specifically, it's not just about the “if,“ but primarily about the “when“ and “how“ – many studios plan their production and distribution chains for physical copies long-term and need clear statements for this, which Sony has reportedly yet to provide.
Why is the timing of this criticism particularly sensitive right now?
The debate became significantly louder at Gamescom already, as Push Square reported. Since then, the issue has reportedly noticeably influenced Sony's own communication strategy – a sign that industry pressure is indeed being felt. The timing is also delicate because Sony simultaneously has to defend itself in an ongoing legal dispute concerning digital game rights.
This is precisely where things come full circle: Just recently, Sony argued in court that “reasonable consumers“ have long known that they don't truly own digital games, but merely acquire a license – more on this in our report on the PlayStation legal dispute. The fact that Sony is now specifically scaling back physical distribution in parallel further intensifies, from many publishers' perspectives, the perception that players will have even less real control over their purchased games in the future.
What does this mean for PS5 players?
In the short term, nothing changes for buyers – physical PS5 games will remain available until 2028. However, those who continue to value a physical collection should keep an eye on developments: The louder the discontent among publishers becomes, the more likely it is that Sony's timetable or the specific implementation will change again before the transition is actually completed.
