The next balance adjustment for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's DMZ mode is here: Infinity Ward has disarmed the notorious UAV towers via a hotfix. Since DMZ's launch, these towers have been one of the biggest points of contention in the community because they made players visible almost anywhere on the map.
What does the DMZ Patch Change for UAV Towers?
Previously, at least one UAV tower was guaranteed in every Point of Interest (POI). That's no longer the case. According to Eurogamer, the following now applies:
- UAV tower spawn logic is now random instead of guaranteed.
- The spawn rate has decreased by 40 percent.
- Multiple towers in the same area are no longer possible.
- The only exception is Deadtown, where multiple towers are needed for progress in DMZ Order.
- The Sedative Inhaler, which hides you from UAVs, now lasts 120 instead of 60 seconds.
Why Were UAV Towers So Controversial in DMZ?
Aggressive PvP players would immediately rush after spawning and activate as many towers as possible to track all enemy movements. Some towers even covered extraction zones, allowing traps to be set for extracting teams. Additionally, a specific character trait ensured that scans didn't expire and remained active throughout the entire match. This exact mechanic made stealth and cautious gameplay difficult until now.
What Does This Mean for Solo and Squad Players?
From our perspective, the patch is a sensible first step, but not yet a complete solution. Players who play cautiously now have better chances of remaining undetected – especially with the extended Sedative Inhaler. However, the core conflict remains: Infinity Ward has confirmed that the inhaler will only become effective against towers with the trait upgrade at some point in Season 1. Until then, the trait remains an issue.
The pace is remarkable: Eurogamer speaks of "another week, another big change" for DMZ. The mode has been keeping the community busy for weeks, most recently due to its story missions. We also reported on this: DMZ Story Missions Are Reportedly Now Private for Solo Players. This demonstrates that Infinity Ward is actively refining the mode and responding to community feedback.
