How many players actually want to buy GTA 6?

Investment bank Piper Sandler surveyed around 9,000 American teenagers. The result: Of PS5 or Xbox Series S/X owners, 70 percent intend to buy GTA 6. 55 percent will grab it directly at launch, with another 15 percent picking it up a few months later.

From this, the bank derives a forecast of over 45 million copies sold by launch. Piper Sandler had already estimated this figure months ago based on visitor numbers in the GTA 6 subreddit – the survey now aims to support it. Wedbush is a bit more cautious: Their analysts expect around 31 million copies sold in the launch quarter, from November 19th to December 31st.

  • Piper Sandler: 70% purchase intent, 55% of which at release, over 45 million sales at launch
  • Wedbush: approx. 31 million sales in the launch quarter (Nov 19 - Dec 31)

Why is GTA Online so important for Take-Two?

According to analysts, the big money will only come later. According to Piper Sandler, 90 percent of prospective buyers also want to play GTA Online, with 40 percent planning to spend money on in-game content there. This would equate to a 44 percent paying player rate – significantly more than other live-service games. Wedbush expects 24 million monthly active players by fiscal year 2029. With an average of five US dollars in additional spending, that would amount to 120 million dollars per month, or approximately 1.44 billion dollars per year.

Rockstar has not yet confirmed an online mode for GTA 6. Our colleagues at PC Games anticipate it shortly after the start of 2027 – this is an editorial assessment, not an official statement.

What do these numbers mean for you?

From our perspective, surveys among teenagers should be taken with caution: They measure intentions, not actual purchases, and the sample is limited to the USA. For you, this primarily means: expect massive demand for servers, downloads, and pre-orders. If you want to jump in directly on release day, you should clear storage space early and use the preload feature as soon as it's available. You can find more about the playtime in our report on the alleged 80-hour story.
