Gamescom was supposed to be a springboard for small indie studios – but for some, the 2026 expo ended with empty pockets instead. The organizers' subsequent reaction caused almost more outrage than the thefts themselves.
What Actually Happened with the Thefts at Gamescom?
Several developers reported that equipment, including laptops and even a Steam Deck, was stolen from their stands during the expo. Indie developer Ryan Laley publicly announced on August 28 that all his laptops had been stolen, and other exhibitors reported similar incidents. Smaller, shared indie stands, with less oversight than the large publisher areas, were reportedly particularly affected.
Why Did Gamescom Have to Apologize for Its Initial Reaction?
The organizers' initial statement on August 29 was poorly received: it said they were “very sad” about the incidents but wanted to “inform guests about general security regulations.” For many, this read like a shift of responsibility onto the stolen exhibitors themselves, who were allegedly not sufficiently insured. The backlash followed swiftly.
Consequently, a second, much more contrite statement followed on September 4. In it, the Gamescom organization admitted that the criticism of their initial reaction was “justified,” stating they had “failed to strike the right tone” and hadn't shown the affected individuals the empathy they deserved. A joint review and improvement of security concepts were announced; in the coming weeks, organizers of shared indie stands are to be invited to a round table to jointly develop concrete measures.
One point, however, remains unaddressed and causes particular dissatisfaction within the community: the second statement makes no mention whatsoever of potential compensation for the affected studios for their stolen, sometimes business-critical equipment. Reactions are accordingly mixed – many welcome the change in tone, but question why a second wave of public criticism was needed for it, and whether tangible improvements will actually follow the announcement. Especially for small studios, who often bring all their available equipment to the expo, a theft is not a minor issue but can be an existential threat.
