CDL: Commentator Maven Resigns After Relationship With Co-Caster's Ex-Wife

The Call of Duty esports scene has its weekend drama: Clint "Maven" Evans, one of the most well-known commentators in the Call of Duty League, has announced he will be stepping down from the league for the "foreseeable future." This follows a relationship he has entered into with the ex-wife of his casting partner, Joseph "MerK" DeLuca.

What Did Maven Write in His Statement?

Evans states that he was very close with DeLuca and his family. The friendship with DeLuca's ex-wife remained after the divorce, and "along the way it became more than that"—they began a relationship. He acknowledges how "unconventional" and "taboo" this is, and that he never saw it coming. He hopes to work in the CDL again someday but admits it might not happen. He calls on his community to continue supporting Joe, the league, and its talent.

How Is the Community Reacting?

According to IGN, reactions within the Call of Duty scene have been quite severe. Many view the move as a breach of trust against a friend whom Evans has known for over ten years. DeLuca himself has not yet commented and has not posted anything on X since October 4th. The league has also not yet issued an official statement regarding the news.

What Does This Mean for the Upcoming CDL Season?

For you as a viewer, nothing tangible changes initially, as the start of the new season has not yet been officially scheduled. Historically, the CDL begins in December, shortly after the release of the latest Call of Duty. Whether and how the league's casting team will be restructured remains open. Evans was one of the well-known voices of the broadcasts for years, so his departure is more than just a side note.

From our perspective, this is primarily a private matter now playing out publicly. We are not judging the relationship, but we note that both sides have so far only partially had their say. Especially because DeLuca remains silent, caution is advised when speculating.
