What was intended to be just a community update for Dead or Alive 6 Last Round – instead, Producer Tsuyoshi Iuchi has ignited a broader debate. His statement: In the Last Round version, Koei Tecmo is deliberately reducing the number of particularly revealing costumes that have characterized the series for years.
What exactly did Producer Tsuyoshi Iuchi announce?
Iuchi explained that the development team wants to shift the focus more towards the technical combat system of Dead or Alive 6 Last Round, which traditionally enjoys high regard in the fighting game community but has often been overshadowed by the series' fanservice orientation in the media. Koei Tecmo has not yet provided specific details on which costumes are affected or whether previously purchased outfits will be removed from the game.
How is the Fighting Game Community reacting to the announcement?
Reactions are divided. One part of the community explicitly welcomes the move, as it could bring the series' competitive combat system more to the forefront – a concern serious DOA players have voiced for years. Other fans, however, fear that with the reduction, a piece of the series' distinctive identity will be lost, an identity for which it is both known and controversial among newcomers.
This step is part of an industry-wide trend: Several Japanese publishers have scaled back the revealing depiction of individual characters in recent years, partly out of consideration for international markets with stricter guidelines, and partly because their own target audience is increasingly focusing on competitive demands rather than aesthetics. For Dead or Alive, which traditionally aimed to serve both aspects simultaneously, this is a noticeable change of course.
