Capcom's Very First Game Gets a Loving Amiga Port

Before Capcom made gaming history with Street Fighter or Resident Evil, there was a small arcade shoot-’em-up in 1984 called Vulgus – Capcom's very first video game ever released. This very piece of company history is now getting a second youth: The well-known retro developer JOTD has released the first playable scenes of an unofficial Amiga AGA port.

Those who follow JOTD in the retro scene know his signature style: In recent years, the developer has established himself as one of the most reliable names for arcade-to-Amiga conversions, with ports of classics like Commando, Ghosts’n Goblins, or Double Dragon. Vulgus now joins this growing list, bringing the vertically scrolling shoot-’em-up with its characteristic two-weapon system – standard laser plus stronger rockets – to the home Amiga.

Technically, such projects usually involve a specially developed code converter that translates the original arcade hardware logic for the Amiga AGA chipsets. Accordingly, it is currently still an early version: According to the first scenes shown, there are still noticeable graphical glitches and sound problems, so a finished release is yet to come. Nevertheless, this is good news for Amiga fans and collectors of historical arcade titles – Vulgus has so far been almost never playable outside of emulators.

JOTD has not yet named a specific release date for the finished version. However, like the developer's previous projects, the port is expected to be released free of charge for the Amiga homebrew community once the biggest technical issues have been resolved.
