Microsoft is currently testing a new model for Cloud Gaming: select participants of the Xbox Insider Program can now stream for free, with the service being ad-funded.
Before you get your hopes up, it's important to note: This offer only applies to games you already own, as well as select free-to-play titles like Warzone, Genshin Impact, or War Thunder. You won't get new full-price games for free through this.
- Each streaming session is limited to a maximum of one hour.
- Before each session begins, a roughly two-minute ad block plays.
- No ads are displayed during actual gameplay – the interruption occurs exclusively beforehand.
- Paying Cloud Gaming subscribers do not see any ads.
- Participation is currently limited to the Xbox Insider Program, and a broader rollout has not yet been officially announced.
This test aligns with Microsoft's broader strategy to segment Cloud Gaming into free and paid tiers, thereby bringing players without an Xbox Game Pass subscription on board. Whether and when this model will be rolled out to all users remains to be seen – we'll keep you updated.
