Valheim Exits Early Access Today: Version 1.0 Arrives with the Deep North Biome

The time has come: Valheim officially leaves Early Access today, September 9, 2026, and launches as Version 1.0. For the release, developer Iron Gate Studio introduces the game's final biome: Deep North, an icy region at the northern edge of the game world, including new enemies, weapons, and environmental hazards.

Coinciding with the 1.0 release, Valheim also catches up to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time. Players who have only been on PC or Xbox until now can immediately start playing together with friends on the new platforms.

When Exactly Does Valheim 1.0 Launch?

The transition from Early Access to the full Version 1.0 happens today, September 9, 2026. The date was already announced in June at the PC Gaming Show, along with a first trailer for the final content update. Valheim is now available on Steam, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and newly on PS5 and Switch 2.

What Exactly Does the Deep North Update Bring?

According to Iron Gate Studio, Deep North is the last planned biome in the game, thus marking the content-related conclusion of Valheim's long development journey. We have summarized the most important new content for you:

  • New weapons: North Axes, Two-Handed Swords, Bows, a massive Round Shield, and the Frostfire Crossbow
  • A new, permanently usable grappling hook for quicker traversal
  • A new dungeon type called "Winding Tunnels," which snakes through the frozen landscape
  • Over 50 new Achievements to unlock
  • New cutscenes for every boss in the game, as well as its own dedicated finale
  • New creatures like the Seal, the mountable Moose, and the eerie "Shapeless Pulp"
  • New resources, recipes, and environmental mechanics typical of the icy region

Why Is Exiting Early Access Such a Big Step for Valheim?

Valheim launched into Early Access in February 2021 and became one of the best-selling survival games ever within a few weeks. Since then, Iron Gate has consistently expanded the game over the years with major free updates like Hearth & Home, Mistlands, and Ashlands, before Deep North now marks the content-related conclusion. The fact that an Early Access title has been so consistently developed for over four and a half years is more the exception than the rule in the industry – many games fade into obscurity after the initial months of hype or are never completed.

How Does Crossplay Work Between Platforms?

According to Iron Gate, with Version 1.0, everyone truly plays together for the first time: PC, Xbox, PS5, and Switch 2 share a common multiplayer pool, eliminating separate lobbies for individual platforms. So, if you have friends with different hardware, you no longer have to make compromises starting today to journey together through Valheim's Viking world.
