Survival games are a dime a dozen on Steam, but “The Left Behind” at least focuses on a setting rarely seen in the genre: a typically Dutch open-world landscape, completely ravaged by the post-apocalypse. Instead of the umpteenth US wilderness or a generic end-of-the-world wasteland, you'll explore polders, canals, and windmill silhouettes that remain recognizable even after the world has ended.
The gameplay follows the familiar survival rhythm, consistently implementing well-known elements: During the day, you explore the environment, scavenge for resources, and hunt; at night, you must defend yourself against ever-growing hordes of enemies. If you die, you permanently lose your save game – permadeath isn't an option here, but the standard. If you don't want to play solo, you can team up with up to three other players in host-based online or LAN co-op.
Besides the main survival mode, the game offers several other game modes for different preferences: Free Roam for relaxed exploration without constant pressure, an Easy Mode for beginners, plus Horde and Endless Wave modes for those who prefer to jump straight into fights against continuous waves of enemies, as well as a dedicated Story Mode for solo players who want to focus on the narrative. The title is being developed by Studio Extrude, which is delivering a deliberately smaller, but content-complete package.
“The Left Behind” releases today, July 27, 2026, on Steam. Anyone looking for a new co-op survival title off the beaten path should at least give this unusual setting a look.
