A new IP, no famous franchise backing it, and yet a sales hit: The Blood of Dawnwalker has surpassed the one-million-copies-sold mark within just two days since its release on September 3rd. Publisher Bandai Namco and development studio Rebel Wolves have officially confirmed the figure.
What is The Blood of Dawnwalker about?
The dark fantasy RPG sends players as Coen through 14th-century Europe, human by day, vampire by night, on a quest to save his own family. The open-world adventure is being developed by Rebel Wolves, a Warsaw-based studio founded in 2022, whose co-founders include Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, who worked as Game Director on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Why is the success remarkable for a brand-new studio?
One million copies sold in 48 hours is no longer a rarity for established sequels, but for a debut game from a still unknown studio without a pre-existing fanbase, it's a real statement. From our perspective, the success primarily shows two things: Firstly, the Witcher 3 DNA within the development team is clearly making an impact; many players likely took a closer look precisely because of this connection. Secondly, there seems to be a noticeable current demand for handcrafted, story-driven single-player RPGs, away from the big live-service waves. This should also encourage other smaller studios to enter the race with ambitious new brands, instead of relying on safe sequels. Precisely because the RPG genre has recently been dominated by big, well-known names, such a strong launch for a completely new IP is a signal to the entire industry: players are apparently willing to give unknown studios a chance, as long as the concept and execution are convincing.
