Nintendo not only presented figures in its financial briefing for the first half of the fiscal year but also emphasized games from third-party developers. According to Nintendo Life, three releases for the Switch 2 are in focus. Additionally, there's an indication that more multiplatform titles will launch directly on Nintendo platforms in the future.
Which third-party games are coming to Switch 2?
The list is short but features prominent titles. These are the dates Nintendo Life reported from the briefing:
- Professor Layton and The New World of Steam: December 10, 2026
- Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis: February 12, 2027
- Final Fantasy VII Revelation: April 8, 2027
Layton is thus still a release this year and is only listed among the 2027 games for completeness. These dates currently come from Nintendo Life; we did not find them in the parts of the Nintendo documents we reviewed. Therefore, treat them with some caution.
Also mentioned is The Duskbloods, the Switch 2-exclusive game from FromSoftware. It was recently delayed but remains part of Nintendo's presentation.
Why is Nintendo pushing third-party developers so strongly?
Nintendo itself provides the explanation. According to the company, evergreen titles from its own catalog and games from other publishers significantly support overall software sales. Furthermore, their games also play a major role in digital-only titles and keep players engaged.
This aligns with the figures from President Shuntaro Furukawa's briefing: Switch 2 hardware sales decreased by 37.4 percent to 6.49 million units in the first half of the year. Software sales, however, increased by 18.8 percent to 24.49 million units. If fewer consoles are sold, the existing user base needs to be kept engaged longer, and strong external games help achieve this. You can find more about the hardware figures in our report on Switch 2 sales for the quarter.
What does the third-party focus mean for Switch 2?
Nintendo Life cites Cyberpunk 2077 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 as examples of already released third-party titles. Support has been largely excellent so far. With Final Fantasy VII Revelation and Tomb Raider, two franchises that many players previously associated more with PlayStation or PC are now arriving.
Our assessment: The individual announcement is less exciting than the signal behind it. Nintendo explicitly speaks of more multiplatform titles on day one, in addition to games developed specifically for the Switch 2. This would be a departure from a time when ports often lagged months or years behind. Whether the Switch 2 will technically perform well with all these titles cannot be said today.
Nintendo's own lineup also remains robust: The Ocarina of Time remake, which we covered separately, was released only recently.
