Anyone wanting to check prices, player counts, or update histories of Steam games will sooner or later find themselves using SteamDB. Now, the popular community service has changed hands: It now belongs to Nexus Mods, the well-known platform for game mods.
What Happened with SteamDB?
The buyer is Chosen, the parent company of Nexus Mods, which has owned the platform since June 2025. SteamDB co-founder Pavel “xPaw” Djundik directly brokered the deal with Nexus Mods. xPaw cites burnout as the primary reason for the sale – SteamDB effectively ran for years as a one-man project alongside his main job, including server costs and support, which he handled alone for a long time.
What Does the Change Mean for SteamDB Users?
According to the official announcement, nothing tangible is expected to change for users initially: SteamDB remains an independent service with its own brand; explicitly no ads and no paywall are planned, a Nexus Mods account is not required, and SteamDB's browser extension will also continue to operate unchanged. Essentially, Nexus Mods is taking over the financing and the technical infrastructure, while the site content-wise remains SteamDB.
How Does the Nexus Mods Deal Fit In?
Acquisitions of popular community tools, long operated by individuals, by larger companies typically cause concern in the scene – too often in the past, such deals were followed by ad banners, mandatory subscriptions, or a gradual reduction of features. However, Nexus Mods itself is not a faceless investment firm; it has been firmly rooted in the PC gaming community for years and thrives on user trust – a shift in SteamDB's direction towards advertising would therefore also damage its own reputation. From our perspective, this is a good sign that the promises are likely to hold true initially, even if it will only truly become apparent over the coming months.
