Sony's Disc Demise: God of War Creator David Jaffe Defends PlayStation's Digital Future

The announcement continues to make waves: Sony is completely halting the physical production of new PlayStation games starting January 2028. Since then, the community has been abuzz – calls for boycott are circulating, and an online petition against the disc demise has long since gathered six-figure signatures. Now a surprising voice speaks out: David Jaffe, creator of the very first God of War and co-developer of Twisted Metal, clearly backs Sony's decision in a new video on his YouTube channel.

Jaffe's core argument: The outrage over alleged greed or a conspiracy against customers, in his opinion, misses the real problem. For him, the end of discs is simply an economic necessity given exploding AAA production costs. Pressing, packaging, and distributing discs via retail costs millions – money that, according to Jaffe, is missing elsewhere in the budget. Most critics, he theorizes, simply underestimate the actual costs behind physical releases.

While Jaffe shows understanding for Sony's decision, many fans' core fear remains: Without a physical medium, the ability to sell or trade used games also disappears, and in case of doubt, game access depends entirely on Sony's servers and accounts. This is precisely what is currently concerning other voices in the industry. Major publishers are now also commenting on the market impact of Sony's move: Sega cautiously downplays concerns for its own business in an interview, and Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, according to reports, sees no long-term damage for the industry as a whole.

Whether the heated atmosphere in the community will calm down due to prominent advocates like Jaffe is questionable – the concern about ownership rights and game archives runs too deep for many. While there's still some time until January 2028, the debate about Sony's digital future is likely to accompany the gaming community for a long time.
