Scalebound Comeback? Hideki Kamiya Is Ready If Xbox Is

Some wounds never truly heal: Almost a decade after Scalebound's cancellation, director Hideki Kamiya can't let go of the topic. In a new interview, he's been more explicit than in years.

What Exactly Did Hideki Kamiya Say?

Speaking with Video Games Chronicle, Kamiya explained that he hasn't officially discussed a Scalebound revival with Xbox head Asha Sharma yet – "but now is my chance to say once again: If they want to do it, let's do it!" He emphasized that he is "100 percent serious" about wanting to complete the project, should it be possible somehow. As reported by Eurogamer and IGN, among others, Kamiya has also recently spoken with several former Scalebound developers.

Why Was Scalebound Canceled in the First Place?

Scalebound was originally an action RPG from PlatinumGames, in which players were supposed to fight fantastic creatures alongside a giant dragon. Microsoft officially halted development in 2017 due to persistent technical and conceptual issues – a painful loss for Xbox fans to this day, as the game was considered one of the console's most ambitious first-party projects. After the cancellation, Kamiya himself publicly expressed self-criticism multiple times and even apologized to Microsoft, even though the responsibility for the failure never rested solely with him.

Kamiya is no longer at PlatinumGames; he has since founded his own studio, CLOVERS, whose President and CEO, Kento Koyama, is also said to have expressed interest in a revival. There has been no official announcement from Xbox yet – neither regarding negotiations nor concrete plans. From the editorial team's perspective, this is hardly surprising: reviving an almost decade-old, canceled project would be a financial and technical risk for Xbox, even if the original director is ready. Nevertheless, Kamiya's sheer persistence shows how much Scalebound is considered a missed opportunity in the industry – similar to other legendary cancellations that still evoke nostalgia and 'what if' discussions years later.

Thus, whether these warm words will ever turn into a real project remains open. Nevertheless, for fans of the old announcement trailers, Kamiya's renewed push is a small glimmer of hope.
