Rockstar Faces Employment Tribunal: Accused of Unlawful Dismissal of 31 Employees

While the whole world is looking forward to GTA 6, Rockstar Games has a serious internal problem. As of today, the Employment Tribunal in Glasgow is deliberating a significant case: The IWGB (Independent Workers of Great Britain) union accuses the studio of unlawfully dismissing 31 employees in Edinburgh last October. Rockstar announced its intention to defend itself “vigorously”, or energetically, against the allegations.

Why Does the IWGB Union Accuse Rockstar of Unlawful Dismissals?

According to the IWGB, the dismissals were a direct reaction to employees at the studio organizing a union. The union speaks of a targeted action against workforce organization and classifies the dismissals as union-busting, i.e., an attempt to stifle union engagement in its infancy. Rockstar explicitly denies this.

How Does Rockstar Respond to the Allegations?

The studio justifies the separation from the 31 employees by stating that they had shared confidential company information on a private union Discord server. From Rockstar's perspective, this is therefore not union-busting, but a normal HR consequence of a breach of trust. The hearing before the Glasgow Tribunals Centre is expected to run until October 16th, so a verdict is likely still several weeks away.

How Does This Case Fit Into the Recent Unionization Movement in the Gaming Industry?

This dispute is part of a series of labor conflicts in the gaming industry in recent years: From QA testers at Activision Blizzard to development teams at ZeniMax, more and more studio workforces have recently unionized, often accompanied by accusations against employers for opposing these efforts. Rockstar itself has been criticized for years for its crunch culture, especially since reports of excessive overtime during the development of Red Dead Redemption 2. The fact that an employment tribunal case is underway against the studio right now, in the midst of the critical phase leading up to the GTA 6 release, is unlikely to help Rockstar's already scrutinized reputation. For players, the legal dispute itself doesn't immediately change the release schedule for GTA 6, but it does show that significant pressure continues to weigh on the workforce behind the scenes of what is arguably the biggest game launch of the year.
