Rockstar Staff Meets Management Officially for the First Time – The Union's Demands

While the final months before the massive GTA 6 launch in November are ticking away at Rockstar Games, something historic is happening behind the scenes: The Rockstar Games Workers Union has held its first official meeting with studio management. Organized under the umbrella of the IWGB (Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain), the union is now considered the largest studio union in Europe, with members in Edinburgh, Dundee, Lincoln, Leeds, and London.

The main goal of the staff during the meeting was to establish a common ground for further negotiations. According to the union, they succeeded: an agreement was reached on a “roadmap for a swift negotiation process.” The union presented five key demands:

  • An end to unpaid crunch – overtime should be fairly compensated
  • Greater transparency in bonus payments and salary structures
  • More flexibility for working from home and remote work
  • Clear protection of jobs from displacement by AI systems
  • A binding commitment against redundancies

Rockstar itself has not yet formally recognized the union, and which specific bargaining unit will ultimately be responsible is also still open. Nevertheless, union representatives consider the fact that a first joint meeting took place at all to be a “step in the right direction.”

The timing is sensitive: The demands come just a few months before the release of GTA 6, one of the most eagerly anticipated games ever. Traditionally, crunch is particularly prevalent in the industry during this intense development phase – with this push, the union apparently aims to prevent this from recurring in Rockstar's biggest project of all time.

How the negotiations will proceed and whether Rockstar will actually make concessions to the union remains to be seen. We will keep you updated.
