PlayStation Blackout: Fans Plan Week-Long Boycott Against Sony's Disc Discontinuation

Anger over Sony's disc discontinuation continues to boil over – and now, online complaints are turning into concrete action. The consumer community DoesItPlay is urging all PlayStation owners to completely forgo their console for one week, from August 23rd to 30th. Essentially, this means: console off, no logins, no purchases on the PlayStation Store – an economic and gaming blackout designed to make Sony feel the market power its own customers wield.

The trigger for this entire debate is Sony's announcement from early July that, starting January 2028, it will no longer produce physical disc versions for new PlayStation games. Since then, the community has been simmering, as shown by our article on God of War creator David Jaffe's defense of the decision. A Change.org petition against the disc discontinuation has now gathered between 180,000 and 345,000 signatures – the numbers fluctuate depending on the source, but what's clear is: it's no longer a niche group that's upset about this.

What distinguishes this protest from mere comment section outrage is the speed at which it's spreading: according to reports, the blackout announcement garnered around 800,000 views on social media within approximately 24 hours. The core concern of fans remains the same since the initial announcement: without a physical medium, the ability to sell or trade used games disappears, and access to one's own library depends entirely on Sony's servers and accounts.

Whether a week-long boycott will genuinely make Sony reconsider is debatable – after all, the announcement only affects games from 2028 onwards, and console manufacturers have typically weathered similar waves of protest in the past. Nevertheless, the action highlights how deeply rooted distrust of a purely digital future is among parts of the community. The debate is certainly expected to gain further momentum by the end of August.
