PHYSINT Drama: Why Sony Really Dropped Kojima's Spy Game

Sony has parted ways with Hideo Kojima's new spy action game PHYSINT – and Xbox has snatched up the exclusive deal. What initially seemed like a simple publisher decision is, upon closer inspection, unfolding into a full-blown industry drama involving budget disputes, missed deadlines, and a fan revolt that's currently causing PlayStation a real headache. We've already covered the initial switch itself in our report on PHYSINT's move to Xbox – this article delves deeper into the background and reactions.

As early as September 9th, Xbox and Kojima Productions officially confirmed that PHYSINT would be published by Xbox instead of PlayStation in the future. For Kojima, this marks his second collaboration with the green camp – Xbox is already publishing his horror game OD.

Why Did Sony Really Part Ways with PHYSINT?

According to investigations by Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, there's more behind the withdrawal than just a sober business decision. Sony reportedly withdrew primarily due to an exploding budget, uncertain profitability, and disputes over timed-exclusive publishing rights. Another significant factor: sales figures for Death Stranding and its sequel apparently fell short of PlayStation's expectations. Additionally, insiders point to missed milestones – the project was reportedly significantly over budget, even though a release is still years away. Kojima himself stated that he had received notification in mid-June that PlayStation Studios intended to cancel the project.

How Are Fans Reacting to the Switch?

Quite angry, to put it mildly. A petition urging Sony to reverse its decision surpassed the 172,000 signature mark within six days. Disappointed PlayStation fans are also planning a week-long purchase and usage boycott of the platform. Interestingly: Not the entire community is rallying behind Kojima – some fans are instead accusing him of “betrayal” for partnering with Xbox, of all companies, after PlayStation once supported him following his split from Konami.

For us, this is a pattern familiar with Kojima: As early as 2015, there was a highly publicized split with Konami, which ultimately led to the founding of Kojima Productions and the PlayStation-exclusive partnership for Death Stranding. That history is repeating itself just over ten years later, with reversed roles, demonstrates just how much Kojima's ambitious, expensive projects test the patience and budget of publishers.

So, what does this mean for PHYSINT itself? First and foremost: A sigh of relief. Instead of being shelved, the game gets a new backer in Xbox, one apparently willing to plan for the long term. A release date remains unset – according to current information, the game is still years away from release.
