Onimusha: Way of the Sword Sells 1 Million Units in Just One Day

Capcom has another real sales hit on its hands: As the publisher officially announced, Onimusha: Way of the Sword has surpassed the 1 million units sold mark worldwide within just 24 hours of its release. This makes the latest installment in the samurai action series one of the most successful series launches ever.

How Well Does Onimusha Sell Compared to Previous Installments?

According to Capcom's own figures, global sales for the entire Onimusha series now total over 10 million units since the first installment in 2001. Way of the Sword is thus well on its way to catching up to or even surpassing the series' previous bestseller – a remarkable comeback for a brand that had not received a true main installment for almost 20 years in between.

Why is Onimusha Doing So Well Right Now?

This success fits into a larger trend at Capcom: With titles like Monster Hunter Wilds and the Resident Evil remakes, the publisher has proven in recent years that a mix of revamped combat systems, modern graphics, and the nostalgic appeal of old brands resonates with audiences. Way of the Sword also benefits from the current boom in stylized samurai action games, which recently benefited titles like Ghost of Yōtei or Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Anyone currently looking for robust sword-fighting action with a Japanese setting has an unusually wide selection right now – and Onimusha clearly positions itself as one of the well-crafted, but less open-world-heavy alternatives.
