The community has spoken, and quite loudly: The campaign for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has been remarkably well-received on Steam. Currently, it holds a “Very Positive” rating with 92 percent, based on over 3,100 reviews. According to Eurogamer, this makes MW4 the highest-rated Call of Duty on Steam in over ten years.

How Well Is Modern Warfare 4's Campaign Received on Steam?
The story has been playable since Friday, October 16th, though only for digital pre-orders. The playtime is just over six hours. Despite this, over 3,100 players have already taken the time to write a review, and the feedback is overwhelmingly enthusiastic.
For comparison: recent installments have fared significantly worse on Steam. Black Ops 7 sits at “Mostly Negative” with just 37 percent. Modern Warfare 2 (2022) is rated “Mixed” with 45 percent. The 2019 Modern Warfare reboot achieved “Mostly Positive” with 79 percent, and Cold War also hit 79 percent. MW4's 92 percent is therefore a real outlier, a significant upward trend.

Are Steam Ratings Truly Indicative?
A little caution is warranted, and Eurogamer also emphasizes this. Those who pre-order a Call of Duty game and play the campaign right on the first weekend are likely to be particularly fan-friendly. Critical voices often only emerge with the full release when significantly more people jump in.
The backstory fits this: The beta had lower PC numbers than expected, and there was community drama prior to release. This makes the campaign's positive start all the more surprising. The initial press impressions also lean in the same direction, with IGN, for example, giving the campaign 8 out of 10 points in its review-in-progress. We've summarized what critics are saying in detail in our article on the first campaign reviews for Modern Warfare 4. Eurogamer itself has not yet published a review.
From our perspective, the rating is still a strong signal. After the weak numbers for Black Ops 7 and MW2, the series has a lot to make up for on Steam, and a campaign is often the part where fan anger ignites most quickly. The fact that it's now generating applause should give Activision momentum for the launch. Whether the euphoria holds once the multiplayer is added is another question.

What's Next for DMZ and Multiplayer?
The roadmap is clear: DMZ will be playable for pre-order customers starting October 20th. The official release, including multiplayer, follows on October 23rd.
