The Early Access for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has barely begun, and already we have the first DMZ oddity: some players are dying before they even take a step. The reason is a spawn point located right in the middle of a road.
Infinity Ward unlocked the DMZ mode overnight for everyone who pre-ordered the game. Pre-order customers can now play the campaign and DMZ. The classic multiplayer will only follow with the full launch on Friday, October 23rd, on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2.
What Went Wrong with the DMZ Spawn?
DMZ plays out on the Hajin map and offers several random starting points. Unlike regular multiplayer, these are often located at the edge of the map, far from the action. This is specifically designed to give you time to make a plan and head towards your first objective.
However, one of these spawn points is located on a road. If an enemy patrol happens to drive by, you'll be run over immediately after the infil sequence. Several clips on Reddit demonstrate the problem: one player barely managed to jump aside, while another went down instantly and was reportedly run over twice. Particularly frustrating: the "Welcome to the DMZ" announcement plays precisely as you die. There appears to be no spawn protection.
What Does This Mean for Your Loadout?
DMZ is an extraction shooter with persistent progression. If you die, everything you brought into the mission is gone. So, anyone who packed their best equipment will be doubly annoyed. While there are options to get back up after being downed, these only help if you have the necessary gear – and in the cases shown, even that wouldn't have helped.
The good news: Infinity Ward has reacted. According to Eurogamer, the notes for a new DMZ patch state: „Fixed some instances where enemy AI could run over players while infilling.“ Note the word „some“ – so the issue is likely not completely eliminated. If you want to play it safe, it's best to leave your most valuable weapons in storage for the first few rounds.
Our Take on This
From our perspective, this is a typical Early Access problem: annoying, but quickly resolved. The fact that the fix came on the second day is a good sign. Initial impressions of DMZ are largely positive anyway, according to Eurogamer. We've explained how to get started in the mode in our starter guide to Operators, Traits, and Prestige in DMZ. And why the mode isn't entirely free is covered in our overview of DMZ access requirements.
