Modern Warfare 4: How to Start as an Operator in DMZ – Traits, MIA, and Prestige

The new DMZ mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is here – even before its global launch on October 23rd. This extraction mode sends you into the massive Hajin Zone, where you collect resources and must extract in time before enemy forces eliminate you. Xbox Wire has summarized how to get started in a beginner's guide. Here are the most important points.

How do Operators and Active-Duty Slots work in DMZ?

First, you assign an Operator to an Active-Duty Slot. They remain there until you discharge them and replace them with a new recruit. You start with two slots; a third unlocks through DMZ player levels. Operators are more than just skins: each one gets stronger through successful deployments and DMZ XP, improves the quality of their Dog Tag, and collects Trait points.

  • One Trait point is awarded for each successful exfiltration.
  • These points flow into three Trait trees: Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist.
  • There are a total of 66 Traits, but a single Operator can only acquire a maximum of 18.
  • If your Operator is eliminated, they are MIA and must be recovered at the FOB using DMZ Cash or discharged. The more Trait points invested, the more expensive the recovery.
  • A recovered Operator retains their Traits but loses their equipment. A free Loadout is provided for every deployment.

Which Traits are worthwhile for getting started?

According to the guide, the Warfighter tree promotes combat survivability, for example with “Possum” (a one-time self-revive per match) or “Viper Sense,” which reports nearby enemies. The Scout tree targets agile looters, for example with “Extra Container Loot” or the UAV upgrade. The Survivalist tree offers all-rounders like “Metabolism” or “Die Hard,” which automatically calls an Exfil when you are near the extraction point. Many Traits are hidden and random, so detailed planning is only possible to a limited extent.

What does DMZ Prestige offer?

Once you have collected 18 Trait points, enough DMZ Cash, and the required rare equipment, you can Prestige an Operator. All points are reset, and in return, they receive a random permanent Prestige Trait that belongs only to them. Empty your backpack beforehand, as its contents will be deleted. Each subsequent Prestige costs more Cash and more valuable equipment.

For context: Anyone who wants to try DMZ should first know what's required – why DMZ in Modern Warfare 4 is not free, we have already explained. From our perspective, the Operator focus is the most exciting difference: instead of anonymous loadouts, you build up a few characters long-term, which makes every death more painful.
