Those who hoped to play the extraction mode DMZ in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 for free will be disappointed: According to consistent reports, including Destructoid, DMZ is part of the full game purchase and is not playable via the free Warzone app.
Is DMZ in Modern Warfare 4 Free?
No. The first DMZ version was released in 2022 as a free download for owners of Modern Warfare 2. This time, you'll need a copy of Modern Warfare 4. The mode is part of the full-price package and launches on October 23, 2026, alongside the game on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. One portal indicates that the free-to-play status is still listed as unannounced on a database page; however, the majority of sources assume it will require payment.
When Can I Play DMZ Early?
Those who pre-ordered digitally (Standard or Vault Edition) will receive Early Access: The campaign started on October 16, and DMZ on October 20. Those who buy at launch will start on October 23 without a head start. You can find all times in our overview of Early Access and release times.
What Awaits Players in the New DMZ?
DMZ takes place in the Hajin Exclusion Zone, featuring Hajin City, a prison complex, a military base, and a fallout reactor. You can enter solo or with a squad; solo players get a stealth meter that shows how visible they are. The campaign's story continues within the mode.
From our perspective, the paywall is understandable but a dampener for the community: The old DMZ also thrived on friends being able to easily join. Pocket Tactics speculates about free weekends in later seasons – but this is only speculation and not an announcement. How the game is received by players is shown in our report on the Steam reviews.
