The release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is drawing closer, and Infinity Ward has now provided an extensive look at DMZ. The extraction mode will launch on October 23rd alongside the campaign and multiplayer. We'll break down everything you need to know before you jump in.
Unlike in Modern Warfare II, DMZ will not be free-to-play this time, as reported by IGN. The setting is the Exclusion Zone surrounding Hajin City. Infinity Ward describes the mode as an "action extraction shooter," while Sony, in its blog post, calls it the "definitive" Call of Duty extraction experience.
What is the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in DMZ?
The FOB is your command center and grows with each completed operation, evolving from a small outpost into a base with over a dozen stations. From the start, these stations are available to you:
- Operators: Manage and select Active-Duty Operators
- DMZ Orders: Accept missions via the Orders tablet
- Stash and Loadout: Prepare your equipment
- Firing Range: Test weapons against various targets
- Deploy: The path to the heavy transport vehicle and thus into the operational area
Later, you'll unlock stations like the 3D Printer, Gunsmith, Vendor, Bounty Leaderboard, Boss Board, and Dog Tag Case. The 3D Printer crafts gear from resources and is used to upgrade your stations. At the Gunsmith, you can buy attachments with DMZ Cash or build new weapons using a Weapon Manual that you first need to extract from Hajin. The Vendor exchanges gear for DMZ Cash, with their offerings rotating daily.
How Does a DMZ Operation Work?
You have three deployment options: Story Missions with repeatable objectives, Dynamic Operations for DMZ Cash and XP, including a Supply Drop for your squad, and Free Roam without any specific objective. Additionally, there's a dedicated progression path from Level 1 to 70, which unlocks stations and rewards.
Each zone has a Threat Level. Playing loudly will result in a tougher enemy response, so suppressors and melee takedowns are worthwhile. According to IGN, you can expect drones, helicopter and vehicle patrols, tanks, bosses, and other players. Sony suggests the Boss Hunt as a tip: Lieutenants and Commanders provide XP, their weapons, and loot. In the After Action Report, you should aim for at least S-Tier to secure the best rewards.
Why Are the Stakes Higher in DMZ This Time?
According to Infinity Ward Co-Studio Head Jack O’Hara, fans found the consequences in the first DMZ version from 2022 to be too low. This time, your Operator is a built-up, leveling character. If you die, it costs money to bring them back, and lootable items can be permanently lost. Post-launch, the studio promises extensive support with map changes and seasonally changing weather.
What Does This Mean for You as a Player?
From our perspective, the paid approach is the biggest shift compared to 2022: Anyone wanting to try DMZ will need to buy the game. In return, the mode gains real depth and its own progression from day one. We also saw the community's engagement regarding the PC launch in our report on the lack of restarts on PC. And regarding the fight against cheaters, read our article on server culling against wallhacks, as this is crucial, especially in an extraction mode with risk of loss. The blog post mentions a PS5 pre-order for platforms; you should check the official site for the complete list.
