Marvel’s Wolverine: Sony Reveals First Sales Figure – 2.4 Million Units

Now there's an official figure: As part of its quarterly report, Sony has revealed for the first time how many units of Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games have been sold to date. The total stands at 2.4 million units worldwide, measured up to November 4. The PS5 exclusive launched on September 15, so the figure covers just under two months. Sony reports this as cumulative sell-through, not a quarterly value.

Is Marvel’s Wolverine a sales success?

That depends on the benchmark. GameSpot's analysis delivers a clear verdict: The game has lost momentum. While 2.4 million units sounds respectable on its own, it doesn't compare favorably to other Sony exclusive titles. According to Push Square, which supports GameSpot on this point, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 sold approximately 2.5 million copies on its first day alone. Ghost of Yōtei reached 3.3 million units within its first month.

So, Wolverine has sold fewer units in nearly two months than Spider-Man 2 achieved in a single day. This aligns with Push Square categorizing the game as a “soft start” and citing development costs of around 300 million US dollars. This figure comes from reporting and not from Sony itself, so we cannot independently verify it.

What does the rest of Sony's quarter show?

Overall, the quarter ending in September was strong for Sony. Reports indicate that the operating profit in the Game & Network Services segment increased by 83 percent to approximately 220 billion Yen. A base effect contributed to this: In the same quarter last year, special effects, including a Bungie write-down, impacted the balance sheet. The number of monthly active users rose from 119 to 127 million. PS5 shipments, however, decreased from 4.0 to 2.6 million consoles, bringing the installed base to 97.9 million. You can find more details in our report on PS5 figures and the PS6 timeline.

Important for context: Wolverine falls within the current fiscal year, during which Sony has raised its forecast for the games division. The 2.4 million units are therefore not a disaster for the corporation, but also not evidence of a blockbuster on the level of Spider-Man.

Can Wolverine still gain traction during the holiday season?

It's possible. GameSpot itself points out that the holiday season and Black Friday discounts could boost sales again. Whether Sony will run promotions for Wolverine soon remains to be seen, as there have been no announcements yet.

Our assessment: The number alone tells only half the story. Sony reports it as cumulative sell-through, without a quarterly breakdown or a split by platforms or regions. For players, this primarily means one thing: Those who haven't picked up the title yet don't need to worry about the game's future, though an update roadmap or DLC plans have not been announced either. We do not know if Insomniac will continue with the series after these figures, and we will not speculate.
