Riot Games published a comprehensive dev update for League of Legends on September 8, 2026. At its core is a feature the community has been waiting years for: built-in team voice chat. This is accompanied by a new strategic draft phase for Ranked 5s and a major update for the popular Classic mode.
Until now, teams always had to rely on Discord, TeamSpeak, or similar third-party tools for voice chat; a built-in system never existed in the over 15 years since the game's launch. That's changing now with Riot Games' next big patch.
How Does Team Voice Work in League of Legends?
Team Voice allows all five players in a team to speak directly with each other in the client, no longer just within premade groups as before. Riot is firmly linking access to this with the Honor system: Only players who have reached at least Honor Level 3 will actually be allowed to speak. Players below this threshold can still listen but not speak themselves. The system also includes voice modulation and an enhanced behavioral system specifically designed to combat toxic players.

What Does This Update Mean for Ranked 5s and Classic Mode?
The new draft phase for Ranked 5s works similarly to Clash: Before the actual champion selection, teams will see who they're up against and which champions their opponents have recently favored. This is intended to make banning and picking more tactical, rather than going into the lobby completely blind. Simultaneously, weekend queue windows will be more generous, which especially benefits five-person teams with varying schedules.
League Classic, the mode with more traditional rules for nostalgics, will simultaneously receive fresh champions, faster in-match progression, cheaper rune prices, and a visual update.
Why is Team Voice Chat Only Coming Now?
Our Assessment: It's no coincidence that Riot is implementing built-in team voice chat precisely now. The firm link to the Honor system demonstrates how hard the developer is trying to get a grip on League of Legends' notoriously toxic game environment, without punishing communicative, fair players. The cautious region-by-region rollout, starting only in North America and Oceania, appears to be a deliberate test run before the feature is globally deployed. If the Honor gate proves effective in practice, this model could also become interesting for other Riot titles like Valorant.
