Juggernaut: New AI-Generated Shooter from Steins;Gate Creators Sparks Criticism

Mages Inc., known as the studio behind the visual novel series Steins;Gate, has announced a new project titled “Juggernaut” – and it's certainly fueling discussion. The reason: according to their own statements, the game was created almost entirely with Artificial Intelligence.

How Much of Juggernaut Was Truly Created with AI?

Mages Inc. itself provides unusually specific figures: 100 percent of the game's complete code comes from AI tools, as do the effects. For graphics, it's 60 percent, and for sound, 50 percent. This makes Juggernaut one of the most transparent cases of AI usage in game development to date – at least in terms of openly communicating the proportions.

Why Is the Community Reacting So Critically to the Announcement?

Despite – or perhaps precisely because of – this openness, criticism is pouring in. Many players accuse the studio of bringing pure AI “slop” to the market with “Juggernaut,” meaning carelessly assembled content lacking genuine creative craftsmanship. What's particularly bitter for many fans is that a studio known for a narratively highly acclaimed series like Steins;Gate is now relying on a process closely associated with a loss of quality within the community.

This case thus joins a larger debate that has been ongoing in the industry for some time. We have previously reported multiple times on similar controversies, for instance in our report on why AI-generated dialogues continue to divide the industry. Since Steam began requiring developers to openly label AI-generated content in store listings, such cases have become significantly more visible than before – previously, many AI components in games simply flew under the public's radar. Whether this transparency obligation ultimately leads to better quality control or merely prompts studios like Mages Inc. to communicate the proportion more openly without changing the actual process will only become clear with the first playable versions.
