While millions of players await GTA 6, Rockstar itself faces a crucial decision: its UK employees are voting on union recognition. This vote is scheduled precisely around the game's release.
When Are Rockstar Employees Voting?
According to PC Gamer, the vote will run from November 12 to 26. GTA 6 is set to release on consoles on November 19, meaning the election surrounds the launch, one week before and one week after. The vote concerns the recognition of the IWGB union (IWGB Rockstar Game Workers Union). If employees vote in favor, it would become the UK's largest games industry union.
What Would the Union Negotiate?
Recognition would grant employees a say in salaries and bonuses, overtime, redundancies, flexible working hours, and policies concerning generative AI. The terms of the recognition agreement have been under negotiation between the union and Rockstar management since July. Committee member Shanti Easton-Steel cited the gender pay gap, inconsistent overtime rules, and concerns about job security post-release as examples of issues.
Why Is This Topic So Sensitive?
The backstory is sensitive. In October 2023, Rockstar dismissed 31 employees. The IWGB called this "the most brazen act of union busting the games industry has ever seen." Rockstar accused those affected of leaking GTA 6 information in a public Discord. The case is now before a labor court in Scotland. Notably, according to Bloomberg, Rockstar's Head of Publishing Jennifer Kolbe stated that the studio would not oppose it: "We go where the team goes. So if they want a union, they will have a union." Rockstar itself has not yet commented on the vote.
What Does This Mean for GTA 6 and Players?
Nothing changes for the release. The vote concerns working conditions, not the release date. From our perspective, however, the timing is a strong signal: employees want a say precisely when the studio has the most attention in its history. The fact that management openly signals it will not block the move would be a significant shift compared to the 2023 conflict.
The outcome of the vote remains open. The result is expected after November 26.
