An unusual marketing move, a massive success: Rockstar Games first debuted the new GTA 6 “Extended Look” trailer exclusively on Netflix before its regular release on YouTube. The result: According to Netflix's own figures, the clip became the platform's most-watched show last week.
How Successful Was the GTA 6 Trailer on Netflix, Really?
The numbers are remarkable: 31.1 million views in the first week, and that's despite the trailer only being exclusive to Netflix for around six hours before becoming freely available everywhere. In 87 out of 93 countries where Netflix maintains its Top 10 charts, the GTA 6 clip landed at number one – even surpassing regular series and films on the platform.
Why Did Rockstar Choose Netflix for a Game Trailer?
For a video game, this is a rather unusual approach. Normally, major reveal trailers are released exclusively on YouTube or the publisher's own channels. The fact that Rockstar opted for Netflix as the primary distributor here primarily demonstrates one thing: just how immense the hype around the blockbuster set to release in November has become – significant enough that a streaming giant like Netflix is willing to sacrifice prime real estate in its own Top Charts just for temporary exclusive access.
From our perspective, this is a clever strategic move for both parties: Netflix gains massive short-term attention and engagement, while Rockstar, through this collaboration, reaches an audience of millions who might not have actively sought out GTA 6 news otherwise. The original reveal trailer in late 2023 had already broken YouTube records – the fact that Rockstar is now even leveraging non-industry platforms like Netflix for marketing demonstrates that absolutely nothing is being left to chance for the launch campaign.
