GTA 6 will not only be massive but also apparently lengthy. Rockstar North Co-President Rob Nelson spent around 80 hours on the main story, including “some optional tasks.” According to GamePro, he revealed this to DiscussingFilm back in August. GamePro is now revisiting the statement and placing it alongside the game's download size.
How Long Is the GTA 6 Story?
Nelson stated around 80 hours for his last playthrough, during which he completed the entire story and some optional tasks. Those who want to tick off everything will likely be busy for significantly longer, but there's no specific time yet for completionists. Important: This is the statement of a single developer, not an official average value.
How Does That Compare to GTA 5?
According to HowLongToBeat, players typically need around 32 hours for GTA 5's story campaign. Completionists spend a whopping 89.5 hours there. While the 80 hours in GTA 6 refer to the story plus some side quests, this is almost on par with the predecessor's completionist time. Appropriately, fan estimates suggest Leonida's open world is about 1.6 times larger than GTA 5's. IGN describes the map as packed with an “overwhelming number of icons for shops, opportunities, and activities.”
What Does This Mean for the November 19th Release?
GTA 6 is set to release on November 19th for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with the PC version following in 2027. We have already reported that the download is 210 GB and preload starts on November 12th. Those planning to jump in right at launch should allocate time and storage space. From our perspective, the number is primarily an indication of the world's scale; only the finished game will show how engaging those 80 hours truly are. Our report on the map size also aligns with this.
