Rockstar is apparently stuffing Vice City full of side activities, and two of them will likely be immediately familiar to RDR2 fans: fishing and hunting. However, anyone automatically thinking of the Western epic should take a closer look, because Rockstar is taking a completely different approach on one central point than they did in the Wild West back in 2018.

Why Can't We Keep Caught Fish in GTA 6?

The big difference from Red Dead Redemption 2 lies in fishing: fish cannot be bagged and taken with you in GTA 6. Rockstar North itself has explained that a classic collecting and resource system simply wouldn't suit GTA 6. However, fishing still isn't meaningless: there will be challenges, small collection tasks, and even narrative moments that revolve around the rod-and-reel sessions by the water.

How Does Hunting Differ from the Fishing Mechanic?

Rockstar is taking a different approach with hunting. It's introduced via a character known to protagonist Jason, and it explicitly serves as an additional source of income. So, those who prefer to earn money instead of collecting fishing achievements will likely opt for hunting over a fishing rod.

Why Is Rockstar Using Different Concepts for Both Activities?

From our perspective, this differing treatment makes perfect sense: Red Dead Redemption 2 is set in 1899, a time when hunted game and fish were naturally essential for survival and trade. GTA 6, on the other hand, is set in the present day, where a car trunk full of fish would seem more peculiar than useful. Rockstar is thus consciously adapting the systems to their respective time periods, instead of simply copying them from the previous hit.
