During Sony's September State of Play, Ghost of Yōtei received several major announcements all at once. Developer Sucker Punch Productions showcased a new trailer for the free combat survival mode “Most Wanted” – and it comes with a real surprise: Jin Sakai, the hero from Ghost of Tsushima, is included as a playable character.
In “Most Wanted” mode, players take on the role of one of four playable characters and accept bounty contracts of increasing difficulty – a true roguelike spin-off in the Ghost universe. Jin Sakai fights using all four combat stances from Ghost of Tsushima, starts with a sticky bomb and Hankyu bow in his arsenal, and utilizes the “Dance of Wrath” ability as his ultimate, which disarms multiple enemies simultaneously.
When Does the Echoes of Sekigahara Expansion for Ghost of Yōtei Release?
Both the “Most Wanted” mode and the free story expansion “Echoes of Sekigahara” launch on October 1, 2026. The expansion tells an additional story centered around Atsu and the historical Battle of Sekigahara. Players who already own the base game can upgrade to the Complete Edition, which bundles both contents – the upgrade costs 14.99 US dollars, with a similar price in Euros expected in Europe.
What Does the Expansion Mean for Ghost of Tsushima Fans?
For everyone who has played Ghost of Tsushima, Jin Sakai's return is the clear highlight of the announcement. Instead of just appearing as a cameo in a cutscene, he is present as a fully playable character with his own skillset in the new mode. Those who want to play the “Most Wanted” mode don't need prior knowledge from Tsushima – the bounty hunts function as a standalone system, but fans of the predecessor series will especially appreciate the allusions.
How Does This Fit into Sucker Punch's Post-Launch Plans?
Sucker Punch had already shown with Ghost of Tsushima that plenty of content would be added after release: Back then, the extensive story expansion “Iki Island” arrived, followed later by a completely separate co-op multiplayer mode with “Legends”. With Echoes of Sekigahara and the Most Wanted mode, the studio is taking a similar path for Ghost of Yōtei, but much sooner after the initial release. This indicates that Sony and Sucker Punch intend to maintain the brand long-term as a recurring PlayStation flagship, similar to what's already happening with God of War or Horizon.
