Important note: This is a rumor that has NOT yet been officially confirmed by Sony or Guerrilla Games.
The PlayStation community can dream again: According to a report from MP1st, a new installment in Guerrilla Games' Killzone series is reportedly in the works at Sony. Specifically, it's said to be a remake of the very first Killzone from 2004, which at the time was considered PlayStation 2's answer to Halo. Several independent publications, including Push Square, TheGamer, and Vandal, have since picked up on the report and support the assessment that there might be some truth to the rumor.
Reportedly, Guerrilla Games won't be working alone but will be getting support from an external studio. The most likely candidate currently is People Can Fly, the developers of Bulletstorm and Outriders, who are said to have previously collaborated with Sony. Allegedly, the project was fast-tracked after Horizon recently faced further delays, freeing up capacity at Guerrilla.
Why Has Killzone Been So Quiet for Years?
That might raise a few questions. Killzone was once one of PlayStation's flagship titles: With Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 on PS3, as well as Killzone Shadow Fall as a PS4 launch title, the series was a firm part of Sony's first-person shooter portfolio. However, since Shadow Fall in 2013, the brand has gone quiet, while Guerrilla Games focused entirely on Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequels. A remake of the original installment would be the series' first true return in over ten years.
How Credible Is the Rumor Really?
While caution is generally advised with leaks, in this case, several factors suggest more than pure speculation: Multiple established publications are independently reporting the same information, indicating more than a single, uncertain source. Furthermore, the timing fits the picture: In recent years, Sony has increasingly focused on remakes and remasters of successful PlayStation brands, such as The Last of Us or Horizon Zero Dawn itself. A Killzone remake would seamlessly integrate into this strategy. Nevertheless, until an official announcement from Sony or Guerrilla Games, it remains a rumor that could still turn out to be false at any time.
Should the report be confirmed, it would be good news for everyone who has been wishing for a comeback of the series for years. Until then, it's a matter of waiting to see if Sony or Guerrilla Games comment on the rumors.
