Rumor: No Half-Life 3 for Steam Frame – but Half-Life: Alyx Likely Included for Free

Important note: This is a rumor/leak that has NOT yet been officially confirmed by Valve.

Shortly before the Steam Frame is expected to launch, a new datamining discovery is stirring discussion within the community. Dataminer Brad Lynch, considered reliable, claims to have found indications in the code of which game buyers will receive for free with the VR headset – and it's allegedly not Half-Life 3.

What Exactly Did the Leaker Claim to Find in the Code?

According to Lynch, strings like “AccountHardwarePromotions,” “HLAlyxPromoButtons,” and “Frame Alyx Promo” appear in the code. This indicates that Valve could bundle the approximately six-year-old Half-Life: Alyx for free with the Steam Frame – similar to how Valve handled it with the purchase of the Valve Index.

Does This Definitely Mean No Half-Life 3?

Not necessarily, but the hopes of many fans that a new installment could be revealed concurrently with the Steam Frame are taking a hit for now. In the currently known leak findings, there are simply no indications of Half-Life 3 development – but that doesn't automatically mean the game isn't being worked on, only that (as of now) it has nothing to do with what is currently appearing in the Steam Frame's code.

The discovery is noteworthy nonetheless: Only recently, we reported on a much larger data leak at Valve with potential Half-Life 2 Episode 3 content – the studio seems to be having a particularly hard time keeping internal information secret from its community right now. Should the information about Alyx being a free inclusion be confirmed, it would at least be a nice consolation prize for anyone already saving up for a VR headset.
