The final installment of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy finally has a date: During today's State of Play, Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch on April 8, 2027. Alongside the announcement, an extensive new trailer debuted with fresh gameplay footage, showing for the first time what the open world truly feels like.
What Does the New Final Fantasy VII Revelation Trailer Show?
At its core is the traversable open world, through which Cloud and his team can now travel aboard the flying airship Highwind. A new feature allows players to parachute directly from the Highwind onto the map – a first for the trilogy. The trailer also showcases Chocobo mounts, a grappling hook for traversal, and the summoning of Typhon in combat. Also newly introduced was the FITS System (Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear): equipment pieces that not only give characters a new look but also grant abilities from classic Final Fantasy jobs.
Who is Playable in Final Fantasy VII Revelation?
According to the announcements, the entire original FF7 party will be playable, including Vincent and Cid, who are set to appear for the first time in Revelation as fully playable characters with their own combat system branches. The game will be released for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox on PC.
This marks the end of a journey that began in 2020 with Final Fantasy VII Remake and continued in 2024 with Rebirth. Both predecessors massively expanded and reinterpreted the original 1997 storyline, featuring their own timeline twists surrounding Zack Fair and the 'Whispers,' referred to as the arbiters of fate. Revelation is set to tie all these loose ends together and deliver the final showdown with Sephiroth – a truly emotional moment for the fanbase after more than seven years of waiting since Remake.
For those looking to commit early: Alongside the Standard Edition, Deluxe, Premium, and Premium Plus editions were also showcased, in addition to a physical version for Nintendo Switch 2 and a separate Collector's Edition. Square Enix has not yet communicated the exact prices and contents of the collector's editions in detail as part of the announcement – it's worth checking the official announcement page once further details emerge.
From our perspective, it's particularly noteworthy how much Square Enix is focusing on the open world with Revelation. After the rather linear Remake and the hybrid Rebirth, the third installment appears to be the most ambitious in terms of gameplay for the entire trilogy – whether this will ultimately benefit the story-driven finale will only become clear in April 2027.
