At Gamescom 2026, Playground Games made a particularly confident decision: journalists were allowed to experience their hands-on session for Fable not just once, but twice – with different equipment loadouts and playstyles. According to a report from Eurogamer, this was no accident, but a deliberate decision by the development team to demonstrate the versatility of the new RPG.
Associate Game Director Will Kennedy explained before the session that they didn't want to “give too much away” but had prepared “two very different loadouts.” The approximately hour-long demo took place behind closed doors and, according to Eurogamer, was the most extensive look at the game to date, which is set to be released exclusively for Xbox and PC.
What Exactly Did the Demo Show?
According to the report, the hands-on session focused on combat and player choice: In one playthrough, editors opted for a more aggressive melee build, while in the second, they went for a more defensive, magic-heavy playstyle. Both runs reportedly differed noticeably in pacing and approach to the same enemies and situations – an indication of how much Playground Games wants to emphasize diverse playstyles.
When Will Fable Be Released and For Which Platforms?
Xbox has not yet announced a final release date; the most recent mention was a window in late 2026. The game will be released for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and directly on Xbox Game Pass. After several past delays, the now apparently playable and significantly advanced demo build is considered a good sign that Playground Games is approaching the finish line.
Several other preview outlets, also present on-site, independently confirmed the impression of two clearly distinguishable playstyles in the demo – a detail that supports Kennedy's statement and doesn't just sound like a PR platitude.
