DLSS 5 Launches – The Big AI Graphics Leap Comes With a Hefty Performance Price

Nvidia is launching the next generation of its AI-powered image enhancement with DLSS 5 – and initial reactions from the specialist press range from excitement to sobering reality. Some publications are calling it the biggest graphics leap since the introduction of Pathtracing, while others warn of a hefty price in terms of frame rate.

When Does DLSS 5 Launch and in Which Game First?

It kicks off on September 3rd, 2026, practically simultaneously with the release of NBA 2K27 on September 4th, which will be the first game to officially support DLSS 5. The new technology relies on "3D-Guided Neural Rendering" and is initially exclusive to RTX 50 graphics cards – on desktop, laptop, and via the GeForce NOW streaming service. However, Nvidia has already indicated that it intends to bring DLSS 5 to older generations of graphics cards in the future.

How Much Does DLSS 5 Actually Impact Frame Rate?

  • According to Nvidia's own statements, an official implementation of DLSS 5 in a game costs around 50 to 60 percent raw performance.
  • Since March 2026, Nvidia claims to have already improved the technology's performance by more than fivefold – so the performance hunger should continue to decrease over time.
  • Nevertheless, initial hands-on impressions from NBA 2K27 describe the visual leap as impressively "pixel-perfect" and significantly more realistic than previous DLSS generations.
  • DLSS 5 is intended to work across all RTX 50 devices in the future, including mobile variants.

From our perspective, this is a classic chicken-and-egg problem: Unless you happen to own one of the most powerful current RTX 50 cards, you'll likely notice the 50 to 60 percent performance hit more than the prettier visuals initially. For everyone else, it's worth observing the technology quietly in more titles before activating it by default – especially on cards in the lower and mid-range RTX 50 price segments, the performance loss is likely to be noticeably significant.
