Diablo 5: Blizzard Confirms Full Multiplayer – Shared-World Question Remains Open

Blizzard has kept quiet until now about what the multiplayer mode in Diablo 5 will actually look like. Now, for the first time, there's a clear statement: During a group interview, Senior Game Director Joe Shely confirmed to PC Gamer that Diablo 5 will support full multiplayer. However, it remains open how closely it will align with Diablo 4's shared-world approach.

What Did Blizzard Say About Diablo 5 and Multiplayer?

Shely was directly asked if Diablo 5 would function both solo and in multiplayer. His answer was unambiguous: “Like Diablo 4, it is a game that you can play solo or multiplayer, however you please, and you should be able to play all of the content with your friends.” This translates to: Just like in Diablo 4, you should be able to play through Diablo 5 completely solo or with friends, without any content being withheld from you, no matter which playstyle you choose.

What Blizzard hasn't revealed yet is whether Diablo 5 will feature a permanently shared open world like Diablo 4, where you constantly encounter other players, for example during Helltides, World Bosses, or Legion Events. When asked, the studio deliberately left this detailed question open, stating that more information will be available closer to the targeted Spring 2029 release. So far, nothing concrete on this topic can be found on Blizzard's official Diablo page either.

How Has Multiplayer Evolved in the Diablo Series?

A look back reveals why this statement is a big deal for many fans. Diablo 2, released in 2000, featured simple multiplayer via Battle.net, but each group played in its own isolated instance. Diablo 3 made this slightly more accessible with open public games but fundamentally remained instanced. It wasn't until Diablo 4 in 2023 that the big leap to a true Shared World was made: in the open world, you constantly encounter other players; you see them at world events, in towns, and simply while exploring. For many, this felt vibrant and MMO-like, while others found it immersion-breaking when a dozen unfamiliar characters suddenly crowded around the same World Boss. This exact debate is likely to flare up again for Diablo 5 as soon as more details become known.

What Does This Mean for Solo Players?

According to Shely's statement, those who prefer to play Diablo alone can breathe a sigh of relief: Blizzard explicitly promises that all content should be completable solo. However, whether you will still constantly see other players in the open world as in Diablo 4, or if there will be options to reduce this, is still completely up in the air. For those who are looking forward to a more MMO-like communal experience, all that remains is to wait for further information from Blizzard, for instance, via Blizzard's official news portal.
