GOG Galaxy is getting a refresh: During its first "GOG Showcase," the store announced plans to overhaul the launcher in 2027 – and release it for Linux for the first time.
Galaxy was originally intended to bundle all PC games from all stores into a single interface. However, version 2.0 never left beta and ran rather clunkily compared to Steam. Now, the independent GOG aims to do better.
What changes are coming to GOG Galaxy?
- The client will officially run on Linux in the future. GOG: “We know this has been a long time coming, but we wanted to do it properly.”
- Galaxy has been revamped for Windows and Mac: simpler, faster, and with clearer views of one's library.
- The timeline: The revamp is announced for 2027.
Important for those who prioritize ownership over convenience: According to GOG, Galaxy remains “entirely optional.” Games can still be downloaded as offline installers and kept.
Does Linux even need its own GOG client?
Strictly speaking, alternatives already exist: tools like Heroic, Faugus, or Lutris manage GOG games, install them, and bundle multiple stores. Nevertheless, an official client sends a signal. With GOG, a well-known store is officially entering the Linux market – especially for Steam Deck fans and those switching over who don't want to manage their library through workarounds. Whether Galaxy replaces or merely complements community tools will depend on how smoothly the Linux version runs at launch. GOG has not yet provided a specific date.
What is GOG Social?
In addition to Galaxy, GOG introduced a new community offering: GOG Social. It aims to be a “quiet, uncluttered meeting place for genuine game conversations” – featuring screenshot galleries, videos, and community polls with nested replies and “zero algorithmic noise,” meaning no algorithm presorting content.
According to PC Gamer, beta sign-ups for Galaxy and GOG Social are already open on the GOG website. Those interested in taking a peek should register there.
