Diablo V Announced: Sanctuary Has Fallen, Releasing Spring 2029

Blizzard unveiled the next main installment in the series, Diablo V, at BlizzCon 2026 in Anaheim. The announcement during the Opening Ceremony surprised attendees with a darker premise than ever before – for the first time in the series' history, evil has already won.

When Does Diablo V Release?

Blizzard is targeting a Spring 2029 release for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The announcement was presented by Blizzard President Johanna Faries as part of the celebrations for the Diablo series' 30th anniversary. According to the official description, the premise is: A century after the events of Diablo IV, Sanctuary has fallen, Diablo has triumphed, and its heroes are defeated. Players will thus enter a Sanctuary where the Lord of Terror has already won for the first time – the central question, according to Blizzard: What must one become when the world has already ended? The first classes confirmed were Demon Hunter, Monk, and the completely new class Plague Knight, described as personified walking death. What Happens to Diablo 4 After the Diablo V Announcement?

Don't worry, Diablo IV isn't going anywhere: The game will continue as a live-service title, currently with Season 15. Additionally, Blizzard announced a new Amazon class for Diablo 4 in 2027, and for the series' anniversary, Deckard Cain, one of the most iconic figures, will return, accompanied by anniversary content and gear from all eras of the series. On top of that, Faries confirmed an animated Netflix series set in the Diablo universe, which, according to her, is just the beginning. All information about Blizzard and the Diablo brand can also be found on the official Blizzard Hub and on the official Diablo page.

Context: Since the first Diablo in 1997, the series has never before begun with a world already lost – even in the darkest moments of Diablo II and III, hope remained a central motif. The fact that Diablo V now explicitly begins with humanity's defeat is a narrative break from almost three decades of franchise tradition and demonstrates how much Blizzard wants to pursue new storytelling paths with the next installment. For Diablo 4 players, nothing changes for now: The game remains the active platform for the series until at least the release of Diablo V, as the ongoing Season 15 shows.
