Diablo 4: Season 15 Kicks Off with New Soul Shards

Blizzard has confirmed further details about Diablo 4 Season 15, which kicks off on September 15, 2026. The highlight is a new item system called Soul Shards, alongside the return of several legendary Uniques from previous Diablo titles.

What Are the New Soul Shards in Diablo 4 Season 15?

Soul Shards can be socketed into rings and amulets with matching slots, granting characters sometimes massive bonus effects. The principle behind them: each shard permanently combines a powerful offensive or defensive advantage with a noticeable drawback. An example from the shards known so far is the Splinter of Lies, which grants 60 percent more gold, material, and experience drops, but permanently afflicts player characters with the Weakened and Vulnerable debuffs. The shards are conceptually linked to the Black Soulstone, which was believed destroyed after the events of Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls and now returns in a new form.

What Other New Features Does the New Season Bring?

In addition to Soul Shards, several legendary Uniques from Diablo, Diablo 2, and Diablo 3 are making a permanent return to the game and, according to Blizzard, will remain available even after Season 15 concludes. New challenging dungeons, rare open-world raids, and a revamped Mythic system are also coming. Furthermore, Blizzard has already tested the Rebirth and Horadric Post features on the Public Test Realm. As in previous seasons, Blizzard is holding back on the official season name and some of the content – everything is expected to be fully revealed around BlizzCon on September 12 and 13, 2026, just a few days before the actual season launch.

Analysis: The Shard system appears to be a direct evolution of the Charm system from Season 14 and is likely to appeal particularly to build crafters who enjoy experimenting with risky trade-off mechanics. However, for players who want to approach a new season casually, the hard advantage-and-disadvantage principle of Soul Shards warrants a close look at the respective debuffs before they are permanently incorporated into their build.
