Surprise from Paris: Eric Baptizat, who as Game Director of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla sent millions of players through Norway and England, is back at Ubisoft. And he's not just returning as a regular developer, but as the Game Director for the entire Assassin’s Creed brand. The news was confirmed by Ubisoft's Jean Guesdon on August 5, 2026, and quickly spread through the gaming press.
Insider Gaming was the first to report on his return, with Video Games Chronicle (VGC) quickly following up with their own confirmation. Infobae, PSU, GamesRadar, PC Gamer, and Shacknews also picked up the story. Five years after his move to Electronic Arts, Baptizat is now back where he spent a significant portion of his career.
What Baptizat's New Role at Ubisoft Means
As Game Director for the entire brand, Baptizat will no longer be responsible for just a single game, but for the creative direction of Assassin’s Creed as a whole. This is a significantly larger undertaking than his previous role on Valhalla and demonstrates the immense trust Ubisoft places in him. Details on specific projects he will directly collaborate on are not yet available, but this personnel change comes at a time when Ubisoft is already readjusting the brand.
Baptizat's Career Path: From Black Flag to the Dead Space Remake
Anyone who has followed the history of Assassin’s Creed over the past decade and a half will already know Baptizat's name. He was Lead Designer on Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, one of the series' most beloved installments to date, and subsequently worked in a similar role on Assassin’s Creed Unity and Assassin’s Creed Origins before ascending to Game Director himself with Valhalla. Five years ago, he then left Ubisoft for EA. There, as Design Director, he was significantly involved in Battlefield 6 and took the helm at EA Motive for the acclaimed remake of Dead Space. These experiences show: Baptizat is familiar with both large open-world action and tight, atmospheric horror experiences – a skillset that Ubisoft apparently considers valuable for the next phase of Assassin’s Creed.
Furthermore, this return isn't happening in a vacuum. Ubisoft is currently undergoing a major restructuring, with several projects canceled and the studio structure being reorganized. The fact that an experienced ex-Ubisoft veteran with fresh EA experience is being installed as brand head for Assassin’s Creed precisely now can certainly be interpreted as a signal: the series is meant to regain a clearer creative direction. This becomes particularly exciting with a view to the next major installment, as Assassin’s Creed Hexe is reportedly not due until the second half of 2027. Plenty of time, then, for Baptizat to leave his mark on the project, should he be involved.
Officially, Ubisoft has so far only commented on the personnel change itself, not on specific impacts on individual projects. We will stay on top of the story and report back as soon as there is concrete information regarding Baptizat's initial tasks in his new role.
