Xbox Network Experiences 20-Hour Outage, CTO Personally Apologizes

For around 20 hours, many Xbox players found themselves completely locked out: From Sunday evening, July 26th, until Monday, July 28th, 2026, users worldwide reported massive issues with the Xbox network. Logins failed, purchased games wouldn't start, and even downloads got stuck. Xbox responded with an unusually open and personal apology.

What Exactly Went Wrong During the Outage

According to Xbox, the cause was the failure of an external licensing system. This system performs background checks – known as entitlement checks – to verify if an account has the right to launch a specific game. If this check failed, game launches were blocked. Specifically, affected users reported the following issues:

  • Failed logins to the Xbox network on console, PC, and mobile
  • Digital games couldn't be launched despite existing licenses
  • Even already installed disc games were affected, as entitlement checks also run online
  • Download and update processes got stuck or aborted
  • The outage coincidentally struck right in the middle of the highly anticipated release day for Halo: Campaign Evolved

The Xbox CTO's Apology

Unusual for a corporation of this size: Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet personally spoke out and publicly apologized with clear words: “This is an an unacceptable situation, and we must do better” – which translates roughly to: “This is an unacceptable situation, and we must do better.” Van Vliet confirmed that traffic has since been rerouted and services fully restored. He also announced an internal post-incident review to investigate the exact causes.

Not an Isolated Incident: Second Major Outage This Week

The timing is noteworthy: Just a few days prior, on July 24th, the PlayStation Network had its own independent outage – our report on the PSN outage that even caused the EA FC Pro World Championship to be postponed. The fact that two major platform networks went down for hours within just a few days reinforces the impression among many players that the infrastructure of large providers is increasingly under strain – especially on weekends with a high number of simultaneous logins. This time, it particularly frustrated players who wanted to jump in promptly for the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved, as reported in our release article, and instead faced an error message.

From our perspective, Van Vliet's swift, calm, and personal reaction demonstrates how seriously Xbox now takes transparency regarding such incidents – previously, such outages would often only be commented on via the support status account for days, without any personal statement from the executive suite.
