Sometimes real life writes the best gaming fails: Ubisoft released the new Complete Edition of Heroes of Might and Magic III on Steam on August 25 – including the main game and two add-ons for just under $10. The problem: The delivered version completely lacked the actual game.
What Went Wrong with the Heroes of Might and Magic III Re-release?
As PC Gamer and independently Notebookcheck report, the installation contained only a roughly 23-kilobyte placeholder file instead of the game itself. So, instead of the strategy legend, buyers literally got: nothing. Affected players found that after downloading, simply no playable program could be opened.
How is the Community Reacting to the False Start?
Community feedback was accordingly clear: Negative reviews for the Complete Edition quickly piled up on Steam, many with sarcastic comments about the missing game file. In any case, the Heroes of Might and Magic III fanbase is traditionally skeptical of official re-releases, as a large portion of the community has preferred the original GOG version or community patches for years instead of Ubisoft's own HD editions.
How Does This Fit into Ubisoft's Recent Heroes History?
To put this into context, it's worth looking at the parallel product line: Ubisoft recently released new content with Patch 13 for Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era. That the re-release of the original third installment – considered by many fans to be the series' true gold standard – would launch with such a clumsy delivery error poorly fits the image of a publisher currently trying to revive the brand.
