Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era – Patch 13 Brings Back Cult Map “The Mysterious Island”

A true piece of HoMM3 nostalgia is back: With Patch 13, developer Unfrozen has officially recreated one of the most popular custom maps in the series' history for Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era. The map is named “The Mysterious Island” and originates from the renowned map designer Papyjama, who originally created it for Heroes of Might and Magic III and has now contributed to the official remake.

According to GameStar, the patch went live this morning and, in addition to the new single-player map, it brings a comprehensive update for the Arena mode, several balance adjustments, and various bug fixes.

What's Behind the Map “The Mysterious Island”?

The name says it all: The map's narrative draws inspiration from Jules Verne's novel “The Mysterious Island” and pits six playable factions against each other. In the original HoMM3, the map was one of the most played community creations for years, combining clever resource distribution with an atmospheric island setting. The fact that Unfrozen is giving the mapmaker an official platform for his work is a rare step and highlights how seriously the studio takes its connection to the old HoMM3 community.

What Balance Changes Does Patch 13 Bring?

In addition to the new map, Unfrozen is also making noticeable changes to the gameplay structure. Here are the most important points from the patch notes:

  • The “Death's Embrace” ability of the Plaguebringer Lich (Necropolis) now deals less damage and has a higher cooldown and increased cost.
  • A bug has been fixed where the persistent damage from this ability incorrectly continued into subsequent rounds.
  • Growth bonuses for several Necropolis hero specialists have been reduced, along with adjustments to building costs.
  • The Qilin units of the Grove faction lose hit points, defense, and luck.
  • The Grove sub-skill “Energy Surge” and individual building costs have also been adjusted.
  • The Arena mode has been noticeably overhauled: Certain heroes now receive additional starting bonuses to their primary attributes based on their previous performance.
  • The option to completely hide the user interface is available again after its previous removal.

What Does This Update Mean for Players?

Players of Olden Era via Steam will automatically receive the patch upon their next launch – no separate download or DLC purchase is required. However, Necropolis and Grove fans should prepare for noticeably weaker stats in ongoing matches, while all other factions will indirectly benefit from these adjustments. If you're craving classic HoMM3 feeling, you'll find “The Mysterious Island” directly in the map selection menu of the single-player mode. From our perspective, it is precisely this approach to the series' community legacy that sets Olden Era apart from many other strategy remakes – instead of merely re-releasing old campaigns, Unfrozen actively brings ideas from the fan community back into the main game.
