At gamescom 2026, Eurogamer was among the first publications to get a behind-closed-doors look at The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, the new, third expansion for the over eleven-year-old RPG from CD Projekt Red. The preview's conclusion essentially stated that the demo was an impressive reminder of how strong the studio's writing still is.
What exactly is The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past?
According to the preview, Songs of the Past takes Geralt of Rivia to the new region of Letten, surrounding the Lettenhoven estate, where he encounters a character named Lilla. The focus is once again on a self-contained, story-driven side quest in the familiar Witcher 3 style, just like the previous two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, offered – only now built on the technology of the next-gen version released in 2023.
When will the new expansion be released?
CD Projekt Red has not yet provided a concrete release date. What's clear is that Songs of the Past will be released as part of the ongoing Witcher 3 support, while the studio concurrently works on The Witcher 4.
From our perspective, this is remarkable: Hearts of Stone was released in 2015, Blood and Wine in 2016 – since then, no major studio has graced its eleven-year-old RPG hit with another genuine, paid story expansion. The fact that CD Projekt Red is tackling this despite ongoing work on Witcher 4 shows how important the brand continues to be for the studio – and will likely delight all those who had already considered Geralt's return a closed chapter.
